The statement

I have just completed a new work that returns, once more, to the notes and studies I set down in 1837 during my journey to the Rocky Mountains with Captain Stewart. My charge was to bring back a faithful visual record of a world no trained artist had witnessed — the trappers' rendezvous, the Plains and Plateau peoples, the buffalo, and the mountain landscape — and I understood then that the authority of my pictures would rest entirely on their truth to nature, on what I had actually seen and set down on the spot.

This new piece draws on those rapid pencil and watercolor studies taken in the field. I have worked from them for decades now, annotating each finished watercolor with descriptions of what I witnessed, because the immediacy of that moment — the movement, the color, the living energy of the frontier gathering — must not be lost. When I recalled the Snake grand entry led by Chief Ma-wo-ma, I noted the magnificence of the dresses, the lavish vermillion despite its great cost out there. That vivid detail, that fidelity to the actual scene, is what I strive to preserve. The viewer should see not an invention, but a genuine record of a vanished world.
