# Artist's Statement
I have just completed a new portrait, drawn from the same principle that governed all my work on Captain Stewart's expedition: to bring back a faithful visual record of what I alone witnessed in 1837. As I wrote in my notes, my charge was to set down accurately from nature a world no trained artist had seen—the trappers' rendezvous, the Plains and Plateau peoples, the mountain landscape itself. This portrait holds to that standard of truthfulness.
I worked from the rapid field studies I made on the spot, those pencil and watercolor sketches taken in the moment that carry the authority of actual presence. The thin, luminous washes I favor allow the figure to emerge softly, naturally, as the light fell upon them in that vanished time. I have tried to capture not just likeness but the vitality and spontaneity of the encounter—the immediacy that separates witnessed truth from imagined romance.
The viewer should feel they are looking at someone who truly existed in that frontier world, rendered with the fidelity I owe to memory and to the commission I undertook. This is not invention. This is what I saw.
