The statement

I have returned once more to my field notes from the journey of 1837, determined to set down with fidelity what I actually witnessed in that extraordinary country. Captain Stewart commissioned me to bring back a truthful visual record of a world no trained artist had seen — the trappers' rendezvous, the Plains and Plateau peoples, the buffalo, and the mountain landscape — and I understood that charge as requiring accuracy set down from nature. The authority of my pictures rests entirely on the fact that I was present, that these scenes are drawn from lived experience of a world outsiders could only imagine.

In this new work, I have preserved the spontaneity of the rapid pencil and watercolor studies I made on the spot, working in thin, luminous washes that keep the whole scene atmospheric and immediate. The composition opens to give the sweep of that vast landscape its due, for the grandeur of the country was as much a part of the truth as the figures and incidents in the foreground. I want the viewer to feel the vitality and movement I witnessed — the energy of that frontier world — and to trust that what they see is genuine, a faithful reproduction of what I observed with my own eyes.
