The statement

I confess this subject carries me far from the frontier rendezvous and mountain passes I was commissioned to record. My charge from Captain Stewart was to bring back "a faithful visual record of a world no trained artist had seen—the trappers' rendezvous, the Plains and Plateau peoples, the buffalo, and the mountain landscape—set down accurately from nature during the 1837 journey." Yet here I attempt figures by the sea in some ancient time, a scene I have never witnessed, working from imagination rather than the field notes that anchor my Western pictures.

In my mountain work, I prized the authority of the rapid sketch taken on the spot—what I actually saw gives the picture its truth. I have "worked from rapid pencil, watercolor, and oil studies taken on the spot in 1837, returning to those field notes for the rest of my life," annotating each watercolor with what I witnessed. This seashore subject asks me to paint without that foundation of lived experience. I can offer only the thin, luminous washes and atmospheric distances I learned handling light on the plains, but the vital authenticity—the power of having been present—must be absent here.
