The statement

I have set down this image of Fort Laramie's interior just as I witnessed it during our journey of 1837 with Captain Stewart—the high timber walls throwing their strong geometry across the yard, the scattered figures giving scale and human incident to the space. My charge from the Captain was to bring back a faithful visual record of a world no trained artist had seen, and I understood that commission as a demand for truth: the trappers' rendezvous, the Plains peoples, the mountain landscape, all set down accurately from nature during that summer in the Rockies.

I worked from rapid pencil and watercolor studies taken on the spot, and though this watercolor comes from my notes years later, I have held it true to what I actually observed within those log walls. The warm earth tones of timber and dust, the clear Western sky above—these are not inventions but the atmospheric reality of the place. The thin, luminous washes keep the whole scene light and immediate, preserving something of the spontaneity of the original sketch. What you see here is not imagination but eyewitness record, the authority of having been present in that vanished world of the fur trade.
