The statement

I have just completed a new work that places something utterly foreign—a soccer match flickering on a screen—within one of my Western scenes. This is not the world I witnessed in 1837. When Captain Stewart engaged me to accompany him across the plains and into the mountains, I understood my charge as "bringing back a faithful visual record of a world no trained artist had seen—the trappers' rendezvous, the Plains and Plateau peoples, the buffalo, and the mountain landscape—set down accurately from nature during the 1837 journey." I have spent my life returning to those field notes, those rapid pencil and watercolor studies taken on the spot, because the authority of what I actually saw matters above all else.

This new picture violates that principle entirely. The glowing screen, the modern game—these are inventions I never witnessed, could never have witnessed. Yet perhaps the collision itself speaks a truth: that the vivid, energetic world I recorded—the movement, the horsemanship, the spontaneous life of the rendezvous—has been replaced by something I cannot authenticate. The viewer should feel the dissonance, the loss of fidelity to lived experience that was my life's work to preserve.
